A Co-Aperture Asymmetric Super-Massive MIMO Array Architecture for 6G Applications

A co-aperture asymmetry super-massive MIMO array architecture is reported in this paper for 6G applications. By adopting an asymmetry system configuration, the transmitter array utilizes all radiation elements of the array while the receiver adopts a part of the radiation elements. To ensuring the transmitter and receiver have the same beamwidth, the same spatial resolution and the same propagation characteristics, the same radiation aperture is adopted for the transmitter and receiver. The proposed architecture can solve the challenge from the system complexity, the power-consumption and the cost of the 6G wireless communication system which requires huge Tx/Rx channels for achieving large amount of transmitting/receiving beams. As an example, a co-aperture asymmetrical MIMO array is demonstrated with a 512 -element transmitter and a 128-element receiver. Numerical results show both the transmitter and the receiver have a wide beam coverage and the same radiation beamwidth when the communication beams point to different directions, which verifies the feasibility of the proposed architecture for the upcoming 6G wireless communication system.
