Millimeter-Wave Wideband Wide-Angle Scanning Phased Array for Satellite Communication Terminals

This study presents a millimeter-wave wideband circularly polarized (CP) wide-angle scanning 2D phased array antenna (PAA) based on magnetoelectric dipole (ME-dipole) elements. The element is fed by a microstrip line and coupled through a modified crossed slot. The ME-dipole element shows a -10 dB wide impedance bandwidth (IBW) of 36.3% (22.5-32.5 GHz) and a wide 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of $\mathbf{2 5 \%}$ ($24.5-31 \mathrm{GHz}$). The radiating elements in the array are arranged in a sequential rotation to further improve the ARBW. The proposed $8 \times 16$-element CP PAA can provide a maximum scanning range of ± 60° at 27.5 GHz. Due to these performances, the PAA is suitable for satellite communication terminals.
