Efficiency-Enhanced OFDM Signal Transmission Enabled by 4-D Antenna Arrays

A new modulation method based on joint space-time modulation (JSTM) using four-dimensional (4-D) arrays is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. This method can significantly reduce the peak-toaverage ratio (PAPR) of the analog circuit and further improve the transmission efficiency of the system. While traditional OFDM transmitters mainly perform PAPR reduction in digital signal processing, the proposed method integrates the space-time degrees of freedom in 4-D arrays. It modulates most amplitude information in time modulation functions and most phase information in baseband signals. Simulations with a 16-element 4-D array was carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.
