A Novel Dual-Polarized Reflectarray Element With Continuously Tunable Phase Capability

This paper proposes an innovative dual-polarized reconfigurable reflectarray element, which can continuously tune the phase shift for the dual-polarized reflecting waves. To achieve phase tuning capability, a varactor diode is integrated onto the reflecting patch. By changing the capacitance value, the proposed element can continuously tune the phase of the reflecting wave. To solve the narrow bandwidth issue of the reflecting patch, coupling rectangular patch is designed to broaden the work bandwidth and improve the reflection loss. Furthermore, two reflecting elements are orthogonally placed in the proposed element to achieve dual-polarization function. Simulated results demonstrate that the proposed element can continuously tune the phase shift within a range of 262°, with the reflection loss ranging from -2.4 dB to $-{0}.21 \mathrm{~dB}$.
