La enseñanza de inglés a niños estudiantes en México: Las percepciones de los profesores acerca del Programa Nacional de Inglés (PRONI) en Veracruz

This qualitative study describes how eleven teachers perceive the National English Programme (PRONI, in Spanish) in relation to their teaching contexts in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather the data. The results show that all teachers perceive a mismatch between what the PRONI official policy states should happen and what, in reality, is done due to contextual constraints. In terms of working conditions, teachers show dissatisfaction with the delay in their payments and the lack of legal benefits such as bonuses or medical services. It was concluded that the authorities need to take urgent measures to improve the landscape of English teaching especially now that English language learning has been proposed to be compulsory at all levels of basic education in the country.
