2025 Jackson Award for Excellence in Graduate Physics Education lecture: There is more to graduate education than is found in Jackson's book
This article contains the remarks I made when I received the 2025 John David Jackson Award for Excellence in Graduate Physics Education from the American Association of Physics Teachers. I believe that our graduate programs should prepare students for the careers that they will have, as opposed to preparing them for the careers that we have. Most of our students will not become physics professors; how can we help them succeed in the jobs that they will have once they complete their Ph.D. studies? I reflect upon what I have learned about this through my experience in program creation, academic leadership, career development, and the climate site visit program of the American Physical Society as well as from my own students.
