Ireland’s Foreign Relations in 2023
This review examines Ireland’s foreign relations in 2023. The ongoing Russian war on Ukraine and conflict in the Middle East demanded a response that balanced Ireland’s values with the realities of EU membership. While relations with the United Kingdom improved somewhat, tensions remained in relation to legacy prosecutions and to a lesser extent, Brexit. Ireland-US relations remained broadly positive while Ireland faced some challenges in its relations with China and Russia. The review outlines how Ireland managed its foreign relations in response to these challenges and notes some prominent deaths during the year.
