Robo Advisors Revolution: Transforming Landscape of Mutual Fund Investments

Robo-advisors have simplified mutual fund investing by making financial planning, including personalized investment plans, accessible to a much wider audience. In this paper, we will explore the role of robo-advisors in mutual fund investing, which has elements of democratizing financial services by providing expert advice traditionally available only to high-net-worth individuals due to cost-effectiveness and scalability through automation. Current study applies modern behavioral finance algorithms and principles that reduce common investor decision biases such as loss aversion and overconfidence. Robo-advisors can provide tax-optimized and diverse personalized investment strategies. In this study, we compare the portfolio composition, risk-adjusted returns, and self-directed investment management paths of robo-advisors with those of those who received human advice. We explore the impact on investor behavior, financial literacy, and broader market dynamics using Vanguard's Personal Advisory Service (P.A.S.), one of the world's leading robo-advisors. Robo-advisors can help improve social welfare by lowering the cost of advisory services and reducing the impact of cognitive biases on decision-making, thereby providing users with superior mutual fund investment opportunities.
