The term tipping point has become commonplace in climate change discourse. Despite the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change defining the term as a “critical threshold beyond which a system reorganises, often abruptly and/or irreversibly”, its use in literature is often vague and inconsistent. In their new paper, Robert E Kopp (Rutgers University, NJ, USA) and colleagues analyse and critique the tipping-point framing.
