Enhancing flexibility in metro transport networks: a novel approach to hitless bandwidth adjustment

As industries such as smart grids and healthcare evolve, the demand for efficient and reliable transport technologies, such as Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), is becoming increasingly critical. With rising demands for high reliability and low latency, flexible and hitless bandwidth adjustments are now essential. During events such as financial transactions, bandwidth requirements can surge by 50% to 100%, making efficient and dynamic bandwidth adjustments crucial to avoid data loss. However, traditional TDM technologies struggle to implement hitless resizing across multihop networks. In the absence of automated mechanisms, adjustments often rely on manual processes, leading to inefficiencies, service disruptions, and increased operational costs. To address these issues, we propose an innovative hitless bandwidth adjustment solution that enables dynamic, hop-by-hop adjustments. A unified notification process and handshaking protocol ensure alignment across nodes, minimizing data loss and enhancing operational efficiency. This solution is based on a TDM technology called the Metro Transport Network (MTN), developed by ITU-T SG15. Laboratory tests have validated the effectiveness of this solution, demonstrating significant performance improvements. This approach reliably accommodates dynamic bandwidth demands, boosting the adaptability and resilience of metro transport networks.
