Genomic characterization of porcine RVH detected in Brazil
Background: Rotavirus aspergastroenteritidis (also called Rotavirus H; RVH) has been detected in humans, pigs, and bats, and is considered an emerging pathogen; consequently, information regarding its genome, epidemiology and evolution is needed. Methods: RVH strains described in this study were detected in stool samples from post-weaning asymptomatic piglets in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. RVH genomic segments were amplified by RT-PCR using specific primers and the amplicons were sequenced. Results: Phylogenetic analysis classified both (BP92 and BP260) strains as I3 genotype. The BP92 strain was further identified as genotypes G4-I3-A6-N1-E4-H3. However, some gene sequences showed either percentages of identity below the suggested cut-off value for the identified genotype or showed similarity above the cut-off values established for different genotypes. Conclusion: The Brazilian BP92 strain may have a genomic constellation distinct from those of previously described porcine RVH strains.
