Antibacterial and antihyperglycemic activity and chemical composition of infusion of Campomanesia pubescens (Mart. ex DC.) O. Berg leaves

Campomanesia pubescens (D.C.) O. Berg is a fruit plant, a symbol of Mato Grosso do Sul, promising in terms of therapeutic properties and biological effects. Thus, this study aimed to verify the chemical composition, antibacterial activity and antihyperglycemic effects of the infusion of C. pubescens leaves. The infusion sample was prepared at a concentration of 1 mg/mL for testing phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. All analyses were performed in triplicate. For the OGTT test, the following groups of animals were used: hyperglycemic control (CH); positive control treated with metformin; test groups that received doses of 250 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg of C. pubescens infusion, by gavage. Afterwards, a glucose overload was administered to each animal to obtain the dose-response curve. After the test, the animals were euthanized for determination of disaccharidases and glycogen. The antibacterial activity of the sample was analyzed at concentrations of 15-1000 µg mL-1. It was tested against bacterial strains. The infusion of C. pubescens leaves presented phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. It also presented an antibacterial effect, inhibiting the growth of bacterial strains. However, the infusion did not cause changes in serum glucose levels and did not influence the total content of hepatic and muscular glycogen. In the evaluation of disaccharidase activities, the infusion influenced the enzymatic activity of maltase. The results obtained provide unprecedented data on the antibacterial activity related to a species with economic and nutritional importance.
