Examining the Relationship Between Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children Whose Mother Had Labour Epidural Analgesia for Their Birth: A Retrospective Cohort Study
( Eur J Anaesthesiol . 2024;41(4):282–287. doi:10.1097/EJA.0000000000001932. PMID: 38084085) Many mothers choose to use labor epidural analgesia (LEA); however, new concerns have been raised as to whether this inadvertently contributes to the neurodevelopmental disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The developmental field incompletely understands the pathogenesis of ASD, however, it is generally believed to be a result of environmental influences that affect the epigenetic expression of genes of already susceptible individuals. Recent hypotheses about the influence of LEA on the epigenetics related to autism have been investigated, without consensus. This group sought to investigate and provide further evidence to the field of childhood autism.
