Epidural and Intrathecal Magnesium Sulphate Administration Errors: Clinical Features and Contributing Factors
( Br J Anaesth . 2023; 130:435–440. doi:10.1016/j.bja.2022.12.015) Normal extracellular and intracellular magnesium ion (Mg² + ) concentrations in the central nervous system are crucial for metabolic processes and cellular activities. Recently, magnesium sulphate (MgSO 4 ) has gained popularity for enhancing the effects of analgesia (through routes such as intravenous, intrathecal, epidural), as an adjunct to opioids or local anesthetics. However, the availability of MgSO 4 in various concentrations or as premixed preparations by pharmacies for infusion, increases the risk of medication errors.
