Effective and Simple Interventions to Improve Outcomes for Preterm Infants Worldwide: The FIGO PremPrep-5 Initiative
( Int J Gynecol Obstet . 2024;165:929–935. doi:10.1002/ijgo.15269. Epub 2024 January.) The 2023 WHO Born Too Soon report details the significant impact of preterm birth on global health, emphasizing its role as the leading cause of neonatal and infant mortality worldwide. Preterm birth is defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, and it affected ∼10% of infants globally in 2020, translating to 13.4 million children born preterm. The consequences of preterm birth extend beyond immediate health risks, such as intraventricular hemorrhage and necrotizing enterocolitis, to long-term complications including cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and chronic lung disease.
