Exploring Novel Applications of Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy in Orthopedic Fracture Healing Assessment: Modeling Study
Bone fracture is a common issue these days and therefore, evaluating the process of healing plays a crucial role in orthopedics. The healing process is usually evaluated by radiography which not only is dangerous but also is time-consuming and costly. This study evaluates the feasibility of using electrical bioimpedance spectroscopy for both bone fracture detection and healing process monitoring in order to overcome the traditional radiography methods' challenges. A biological tissue along with different layers was modelled using COMSOL software. Firstly, the functionality of impedance spectroscopy was assessed for the evaluating the healing process, and then other factors such as the depth of the bone were investigated. Our results have demonstrated that as the bone experiences fractures, the impedance values fall significantly due to the accumulation of fluids, including blood in the fracture site.
