Neurodevelopmental Outcomes After Late Preterm Antenatal Corticosteroids: The ALPS Follow-Up Study
( JAMA . 2024;331(19):1629–1637. doi:10.1001/jama.2024.4303) The Antenatal Late Preterm Steroids (ALPS) trial, a significant study in US clinical practice, demonstrated that administering antenatal betamethasone to women delivering between 34 and 36 weeks 6 days of gestation could reduce short-term neonatal respiratory morbidity. However, the trial also revealed a higher incidence of neonatal hypoglycemia linked to the betamethasone treatment. Given these findings, a subsequent follow-up study was designed to assess whether this late-preterm steroid administration had any impact on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in children.
