Leakage Inductance Reduction in Coupled Inductors Used in Quasi-Resonant Flyback Converters as LED Drivers

This paper presents the demonstration of a method for reducing leakage inductance in coupled inductors used in quasi-resonant flyback converters as LED drivers, and its impact on converter efficiency. It briefly explains the leakage inductance effects in flyback converters and discusses methods to mitigate the flux leakage in coupled inductors. The interleaving technique is applied to eleven inductor models with similar characteristics but different winding structures, and results are compared through theoretical calculation and practical measurements. The best results show a reduction in the switch voltage peak from 629V to 533V and an increase in efficiency from 86,77 % to 91,5 %, along with a significant decrease in components temperatures, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method at improving converter’s performance and lifespan without additional components.
