Performance Evaluation of Perforated Fin Heat Sink for Active Thermal Management
Heat transfer management performs an imperative job in the configuration of electronic components. The use of modern technology and optimized design of heat sink is vital to avoid overheating and damage to electronic components. Porous heat sink has been shown to enhance heat transfer for better-quality thermal removal. This paper examines the affect of perforations on the heat transfer performance of a straight fin heat sink under forced convective heat transfer. A numerical simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is utilized to inspect heat transfer properties, including temperature distribution, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient of perforated heat sink. Furthermore, Response Surface Optimization (RSO) is carried out to optimize the size of perforations, thickness and height of fins for better heat removal under specified boundary conditions. The simulation results reveal that the presence of optimized perforations enhance heat transfer performance by promoting fluid mixing and increasing convective heat transfer.
