Enhancing Spatial Visualization Skills Through 3D Modeling and Printing: A Comprehensive Dataset from Chinese University Students

This study investigates the impact of 3D modeling and printing courses on the spatial visualization abilities of university students at Jiaying University in Guangdong Province, China. The research involved 75 students across various majors, highlighting the critical role of spatial visualization in STEM education and its connection to overall cognitive functioning. Individual differences in spatial skills, influenced by factors such as gender, academic major, and prior spatial experiences, were explored. The integration of 3D technologies in education was found to significantly enhance these skills by providing hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that improve students' ability to visualize and manipulate three-dimensional objects. Data were collected through the 'WENJUANXING' online survey platform, and spatial visualization abilities were measured before and after the course using the Revised Purdue Spatial Visualization Test: Rotations (Revised PSVT: R). This research contributes a culturally contextualized dataset, offering insights into cross-cultural educational practices and supporting the development of tailored, effective educational interventions. Researchers and educators can use these data to refine curriculum design in cognitive psychology and STEM, with a focus on inclusive and culturally responsive pedagogy. The dataset is publicly accessible at https://doi.org/10.17632/SMVWR6DK7Y.1.
