A Consumption Optimization Method for Smart Homes Utilizing Backup Batteries

In modern power grids, the electricity market facilitates two-way communication with smart meters for residential consumers. This capability allows clients to adjust their consumption based on time-of-use (TOU) tariffs and load shedding commands while ensuring their satisfaction. This paper introduces an innovative optimizing method for the home controller, enabling the selection of optimal start times for devices in accordance with TOU signals. It also incorporates strategies to avoid load shedding, all while leveraging a backup battery system to smooth out the load consumption profile. Additionally, the controller utilizes the battery during peak electricity pricing periods to minimize electricity costs. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method effectively reduces both total costs and instances of load shedding.
