Consideration of Luminance Standard Values Based on Appropriate Contrasts Between Desk Illuminance and The Average Luminance of The Space

In Japan, the Academic Standard for Lighting Environment (AIJES-L0002-2016) was established by the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2016 [1]. After several years of practical application, its revision is now under discussion. This standard specifies recommended minimum average luminance values for ceiling and wall surfaces. However, the internal reflectance values on which these recommendations are based are set quite low to accommodate diverse design requirements, leading to concerns about excessive contrast relative to the illuminance of work surfaces. This study revisits the assumptions regarding interior reflectance and proposes an updated luminance standard to improve lighting design practices.
