Addressing Gaseous Impurities in Packaged Laser Diodes
Laser diodes used in non-lighting applications, such as telecommunication, automotive and augmented reality applications, are often hermetically sealed to protect these devices from possible damages due to atmospheric gases, harsh environment and dust, aiming for stable performances and longer lifetime. However, these sealed devices may experience issues caused by internal outgassing of gas species like H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O, H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>, and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) released by inner materials or components. The new ZeDry® family getter solutions provide combined features in terms of improved gas sorption action, enhanced thermal and mechanical stability with anti-reflective coating properties. Indeed the new ZeDry® black getter coatings are effective in reducing scattered light and stray light, so improving the performances of the optical systems. ZeDry®-"black version" acts as an absorber of visible and IR wavelength light. New getter materials have been developed in order to sorb main detrimental gases and they are able to cope with high amounts of moisture, hydrogen and organic molecules.
