Minocycline-Induced Agranulocytosis
Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used in the treatment of acne. Various idiosyncratic adverse effects associated with its use have been reported. Agranulocytosis is a serious complication of drug therapy, which can be caused by many commonly used nonchemotherapy drugs. We report a 19-year-old man, taking oral minocycline for the treatment of acne, who presented with septic shock. Investigations revealed severe neutropenia (0 × 109/L). Bone marrow biopsy showed arrest of maturation. After withdrawal of the drug and supportive management, his neutrophil count improved. We would like to highlight this rare presentation of targeted cytopenia after minocycline therapy.
