Development of Selective Cationic Membranes for Lithium Recovery from Brines Using Electrodialysis Processes
This study explores the development of a composite λ-MnO2/Purolite C100 membrane for the selective recovery of lithium from brine using electrodialysis. The membrane leverages the distinctive 3D tunnel structure of λ-MnO2, enabling efficient lithium-ion migration while reducing interference from coexisting cations. Characterization of the membrane revealed favorable properties, including a water absorption rate of 0.37%, a lithium-ion exchange capacity of 4.32 mEq/g, a membrane potential of 51 mV, and an electrical resistance of 1.27 Ω cm2. Initial tests on Khorobiabanak brine, with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium and low lithium content, achieved a lithium recovery rate of 2.3%. To further assess the membrane’s performance, tests with simulated brine containing 1% lithium demonstrated a lithium recovery rate of 44.5%, an energy consumption of 0.185 kWh/mol, and a current efficiency of 57.9%. These findings highlight the significant potential of the designed membrane system for efficient lithium recovery from brines with high Mg/Li ratios.
