Report of the editor of the Asia‐Pacific Economic History Review for 2024
In 2024, the Asia-Pacific Economic History Review published 16 articles, including two special issues, Indigenous Populations of the Pacific and Women and Australian Business History. The high quality of articles published in the last year reflects the outstanding efforts of authors and editors. The following table reports the annual number of submissions received, submissions that were not desk rejected, and manuscripts that were not desk rejected after being submitted independently (i.e., not a Butlin lecture or part of a special issue). The data are organised longitudinally; the rates of review and acceptance in a particular year describe outcomes for manuscripts submitted in that year. The data indicate the Asia-Pacific Economic History Review is a small but growing journal that, allowing for year-to-year variation, accepts about one-quarter of manuscripts received. During 2024, Professor Jennifer Aston (Northumbria University) joined the editorial board and Professor Martine Mariotti (ANU) joined the editorial team as an Associate Editor. Jennifer has very capably assisted the journal in recent years with the development of gender, law and business content. Martine has been an active editorial board member for some time. I am delighted to welcome Jennifer to the editorial board and Martine as Associate Editor. The other associate editors are Sumner LaCroix, Dan Li, Chicheng Ma, Hamish Maxwell-Stewart, Jim McAloon, Florian Ploeckl and Brian Varian. Together they handle a diverse and growing stream of manuscripts. Every year members of the editorial board select one paper to receive the Sir Timothy Coghlan award for best paper (papers originating as Butlin lectures are excluded). Previous holders of this recognition are listed at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/2832157x/sir_timothy_coghlan_prize. The Coghlan prize winner for 2024 is Shao-yu Jheng, Hui-wen Koo, Kun-jung Wu, ‘Property rights in a weak state: evidence from land-pawning in Qing Taiwan (1683–1895)’ https://doi.org/10.1111/aehr.12288. Congratulations to the authors of this splendid paper!
