On the variation in the types of antonymy

The purpose of this article is to explore how the type of antonymy between ‘gilda’ (길다, long) and ‘jjalda’ (짧다, short) varies in parallel sentences. Although ‘gilda’ and ‘jjalda’ are commonly known to be gradable antonyms, the type of antonymy can change elastically when the two words are co-occurring. In order to observe how the type of antonymy changes, we interpret the type of antonymy formed by ‘gilda’ and ‘jjalda’ based on set quantification. In particular, this study investigates how the types of antonymy between the two words change in parallel constructions where ‘gilda’ and ‘jjalda’ co-occur frequently. As a result, we found that the co-occurrence of antonyms in parallel constructions can change the type of antonymy by influencing the semantic properties of the parallel construction.
