The Impact of Microfinance on Women's Economic Empowerment in Suburban Mumbai
This study offers a detailed exploration of the challenges and impacts of microfinance programs on beneficiaries, particularly focusing on women's economic empowerment in suburban Mumbai.Primary data collected from 310 responses through self-help groups, local council meetings, and community development projects highlights both the benefits and obstacles faced by participants.Microfinance has notably empowered individuals by enhancing financial independence, increasing income, and improving social status. However, challenges such as high interest rates, short repayment periods, and limited financial literacy persist, often leading to cash flow issues and over-indebtedness.The inflexibility of loan terms and restricted access to larger loans also impede business growth.Despite these hurdles, microfinance programs have significantly fostered community involvement, boosted decision-making confidence, and promoted asset ownership among beneficiaries.Addressing these challenges through improved financial literacy programs, more flexible loan terms, and enhanced support services could further amplify the positive impacts of microfinance on economic stability and personal growth for women in suburban Mumbai.
