(+)‐Dehydroabietylamine Based Phase Selective Organogelator: Sustainable Solution for Textile Dyes Removal and Oil Spill Remediation

Abstract In this study, we report an ecofriendly, inexpensive and sustainable method for successful and effective dye removal from aqueous media up to 90% at room temperature. Three disperse dyes were examined in this study including, Red RD‐RBLS, Foron Blue SE‐2R and Foron Black S‐2B2S. The removal is carried out using a thiourea based low molecular weight organogelator (LMWOG) prepared from (+)‐dehydroabietylamine, a tricyclic diterpene, through adsorption. LMWOGs form self‐assemblies through non‐covalent interactions (H‐bonding, π−π stacking, electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic interactions). The dye adsorption also occurs due to non‐covalent interactions among gelator moleculaes and dye molecules. gelator is recovered and reused. Additionally, the synthesized thiourea gelator ( T‐1) shows potential as an oil spill remedy. The gelator ( T ‐ 1) is applied in powder form to gelate hexane, ethylacetate, crudeoil, petrol, diesel and kerosine oil effectively from oil‐water mixture.
