Bandwidth Enhancement of Compact Antenna Using Partial Ground Plane for UWB Applications

This paper proposes a compact microstrip antenna for ultrawideband (UWB) applications. This antenna uses Rogers RT-5880 substrate, featuring a thickness of 1.57 mm, a loss tangent of 0.0009, and a relative permittivity of 2.2. The overall dimensions of the antenna are 20 mm x 16 mm x 1.57 mm, and it includes a feed line with a characteristic impedance of 50Ω. A slot is integrated into the patch to enhance the antenna's performance, and a partial ground plane is employed to achieve a broader bandwidth. The simulated bandwidth, with a return loss (RL) greater than 10 dB, ranges from 3.3 GHz to 11.7 GHz, encompassing the entire UWB spectrum (8.4 GHz). The design and parametric analysis were conducted using CST Studio Suite, including adjustments to dimensions such as feed length, ground length, chamfered edges, and the slot.
