Computational Study of EBG Structures for Aperture Shielding
This study investigates the use of EBG structures to mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) from apertures in metallic enclosures. EBG structures, periodic arrangements of dielectric or metallic elements, create a bandgap that suppresses electromagnetic wave propagation within a specific frequency range. A computational approach, using CST Studio Suite, was employed to design and simulate the EBG structures. The design process involved creating a metallic sheet with an aperture, followed by the integration of single-layer and multilayer EBG structures. The simulation results demonstrate that EBG structures, particularly multi-layer configurations, significantly reduce the electric field strength within the target frequency range of 4.3 to 8.5 GHz. For instance, a 1-layer EBG structure reduced the electric field by over 20 dB at 6 GHz. This paper highlights the effectiveness of EBG structures in improving the shielding performance of electronic enclosures.
