IoT-Integrated Cashless Sanitary Pad Vending Machine for Sustainable Menstrual Hygiene Management in Bangladesh
Access to menstrual hygiene products remains a significant challenge for many women in underserved areas, particularly in rural and suburban regions of Bangladesh. A comprehensive survey involving 374 women across urban, suburban, and rural communities revealed that over 30% of respondents in urban and suburban areas still face difficulties accessing feminine care products, with 42% citing lack of availability as a major challenge. To address these issues, this study proposes an IoT-integrated, cashless sanitary pad vending machine designed to improve accessibility. The proposed solution utilizes RFID technology, a mobile payment recharge system (e.g. bKash), and edge computing to enhance user experience, reduce operational costs, and increase convenience. A prototype of the vending machine was developed and tested, demonstrating high reliability in dispensing products and facilitating user transactions. The results indicated a 30% faster dispensing time compared to existing methods, emphasizing significant efficiency gains. Additionally, the comparative analysis highlighted reduced payment time when using registered RFID tags. These findings suggest that IoT and edge computing can play a crucial role in enhancing menstrual product access for underserved populations. Future work includes incorporating AI for predictive inventory management and enhanced data security, supporting sustainable menstrual health solutions in schools, workplaces, and rural communities.
