Integrated Communication and Sensing mmWave 5G-NR Research Platform utilizing the Open-Source OAI Stack with Camera-Assisted Beam Management
The 5th generation (5G) communication systems and beyond are increasingly utilizing millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands, creating promising opportunities to integrate wireless communications with computer vision due to their shared reliance on line-of-sight (LOS). This paper presents an innovative open-source utilized research platform designed for testing and experimentation with a vision-aided 5G next-generation NodeB (gNB) that operates within the mmWave radio spectrum. The platform combines wireless communications and computer vision to enhance overall performance. The demonstrator illustrates proactive beam switching of a gNB Frequency Range 2 (FR2) phased array, triggered by data from a sensor (video camera), to prevent LOS blockage.
