Comparison of Metasurface and Conventional Dipole Antennas for Cellular Sector Applications
The performance of metasurface and conventional dual-slant dipole array elements is studied for 4G and 5G cellular 65° sector base station applications. The metasurface dipole provides a 3-dB beamwidth stability improvement of 4° across the band of interest for both azimuth and elevation planes compared to conventional dipole antenna. Furthermore, the metasurface dipole antenna has a wider bandwidth. The proposed metasurface dipole antenna can achieve a 14 dB impedance bandwidth of 51% in frequency range of 1.7–2.88 GHz. The isolation is better than 35 dB and the stable radiation patterns have an average boresight gain of 8.4 dBi. The overall antenna size is 0.42 λ × 0.42 λ × 0.14λ over a 0.62 λ × 0.62 λ ground plane.
