Design and Analysis of a linearly polarized substrate integrated waveguide fed DRA for enhanced 5G performance

The advent of 5G technology necessitates exploring innovative antenna solutions to meet its demanding performance criteria. SIW feed structure combined with DRAs offers a promising approach for designing a high-efficiency, compact, wide band, and high gain antenna. In this study, a novel design using the substrate integrated waveguide with a dielectric resonator antenna is studied that is excited by an E-shape slot. The proposed antenna is designed for 5G bands, named N257, and N258 applications. Rogers 5880 is used as substrate with a permittivity of 2.2 with the cladding of copper 0.035mm on both sides, in contrast, DRA has a permittivity of 10. This antenna demonstrates a wide simulated impedance bandwidth from 25.1 to 31.2 GHz, achieving a high gain of 8.6 dBi at 26 GHz and 8.3 dBi at 28 GHz due to the excitation of the DRA in higher- order mode. The design exhibits over 96% radiation efficiency due to minimal copper losses incurred in DRA and the use of low-loss SIW feed. These results highlight the antenna's suitability for 5G applications in the current era.
