Phased-Array Reconfigurable Antenna for Beam Steering in Ground Penetrating Radar

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) plays a critical role in subsurface imaging, where antenna performance is key to signal penetration and accuracy. This paper presents the design and simulation of a reconfigurable beam pattern antenna for GPR applications, featuring a microstrip patch design with phased array beam steering capabilities. Operating at 2 GHz with a 35.5% bandwidth, the antenna demonstrates high radiation efficiency and enhanced directional control. Using Keysight's Advanced Design System (ADS), simulations focused on S-parameters, far-field patterns, and beam steering performance. The results show improvements in gain and directivity over traditional GPR antennas, with dynamic beam steering enabled by phase-shift adjustments. This capability allows for broader area coverage without mechanical movement, offering significant advantages for land surveying and subsurface object detection. Future efforts will focus on hardware implementation and validation in real-world environments.
