Design and numerical investigations of natural convection of heatsink fins with serrated microstructure

In order to solve the problem of increasing power density of natural convection cooling edge computing equipment, a heatsink with serrated microstructure have been designed in this paper. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out in this paper to solve the continuity, momentum, turbulence, and energy equations to predict the flow and temperature field for different fins on a vertical base. The results of heat dissipation with different number of serrated fins with different heating power are studied based on the rectangular fin heatsink, which is showed that the heat transfer enhancement is better with serrated fins which is placed vertically than with the rectangular fins. Within the scope of this study, the maximum temperature can be reduced by 7.5 K, the thermal resistance can be reduced by $\mathbf{7. 0 4 \%} \%$, and the fin weight can be reduced by 28.3%. Additionally, the section shape of the heatsink with serrated microstructure is regular, can be produced by aluminum extrusion profile, which is a high feasibility method of mass production alternative.
