Resilience Evaluation of Electrical Distribution Systems with DER and EVCI
Resilience has recently gained interest in all areas of engineering with the goal of developing resilient operational systems that can handle any threat or event. The better half of the last decade has given rise to several research and evaluation standards to define resilience in electrical distribution systems (EDS). Many researchers have proposed various metrics for the evaluation of resilience, considering different parameters. However, a comprehensive metric that is consistent for various changes in the system configuration and different practical scenarios is still being searched. We propose a metric that considers the system’s inherent properties along with service-based parameters considering service possibilities and service fulfilment conditions. The performance evaluation of the proposed metric is analyzed for varied cases of integration of distributed energy sources (DERs) and critical loads (CLs). Also, we have considered a scenario that takes into account the electrical vehicle charging infrastructures (EVCI) as CLs, which will soon be a near-futuristic scenario where energy vehicles (EVs) need to be charged at the charging stations to provide services during extreme events. The resilience of the system increases from 82% to 97% with the inclusion of DERs and drops by less than 1% with the addition of more CLs and EVCIs. The proposed metric demonstrated consistency in the resilience evaluation across a wide range of cases and is robust and suitable for the EDS’s goals for planning and operational resilience.
