Performance Improvement of Antenna Arrays via Frequency Selective Surface Methods

This paper presents a high-gain circular microstrip array antenna integrated with a frequency-selective surface (FSS) designed for sub-6 GHz 5G applications. The proposed antenna features a 1x2 circular patch array configuration, paired with an FSS that includes an inner circular structure and an outer square configuration, arranged in an 8-cell array with a length of 5 unit cells. The FSS acts as a reflector, enhancing the antenna's gain and bandwidth. The design achieves a wide stopband transmission coefficient, optimized for the sub-6 GHz frequency range, and demonstrates a high gain of 9.3 dBi at 3.5 GHz, representing a 14.81% increase from the initial gain of 8.1 dBi. The integration of the FSS leads to a significant 14.29% improvement in efficiency. The findings presented in this study are derived solely from simulation. This configuration is well-suited for urban and rural 5G deployments, where high data transmission rates and efficiency are essential.
