Linear Modified Distribution Power Flow Analysis

The distribution network (DN), generally radial in structure, is under focus due to the continuous increase in the addition of new components ranging from distributed energy resources (DERs) to electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs). The latest addition will effectively increase the variation in DN states (bus voltage phasors) by continuously changing the bus injection values. Hence, power flow (PF) analysis is needed to obtain the values of DN states quickly. Another feature of DN is the inherent high R/X ratio of the associated lines. Thus, the conventional backward-forward sweep method has been used due to better suitability with radial DNs of high R/X ratio. For this, a modified distribution power flow (Mod-Dist-Flow) method has been derived in this paper, and its lossless model is tested on standard IEEE 33 bus and 69 bus balanced test systems. The results obtained compared with AC power flow (ACPF) and linear distribution (Lin-Dist-Flow) PF solution indicate a significant improvement of atleast 74.72% over Lin-Dist-Flow PF solution for the test cases. Bus voltage angle evaluation after attaining bus voltage magnitudes illustrates another advantage of the proposed Mod-Dist-Flow.
