A Novel Circularly Polarized Trapezoidal Dielectric Resonator Antenna for Millimeter Wave 5G Applications

A novel ultra-wide band, circularly polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna is proposed here that can be used for millimeter wave 5G applications in the frequency band of 23.3 GHz to 28 GHz which is 17.3 percent bandwidth of input impedance. The DRA designed here is a novel trapezoidal shaped antenna which is circularly polarized. A defective ground slot is prepared over the ground plane to improve the bandwidth further. This DRA has generated a gain value of 5.6 dBi without conformal strip and 7.5 dBi gain with conformal strips over its surface. The antenna is circularly polarized using the only mode of excitation TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">X12</inf> mode. The DRA is right hand circularly polarized with polarization bandwidth of 1 GHz at 26 GHz and 0.5 GHz at 25 GHz, which is the most suitable bands for 5G milli meter wave applications from 24 GHz to 28 GHz frequency band. The conformal strip feed enhances the gain of the DRA by 1.5 dB. These features of high gain, wide bandwidth and circular polarization make this antenna more suitable for millimeter wave 5G applications.
