A Study on Latency in L-Band LEO Satellite Networks for IoT Applications
As the demand for IoT connectivity grows, the need to extend coverage to remote and underserved regions become crucial. Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations offer a viable solution, providing global coverage with reduced latency compared to traditional satellite systems. This paper presents a testbed to evaluate the performance of L-Band LEO satellite-based IoT networks, focuses on latency. The latency was measured by assessing the time elapsed between sensor data captured at the gateway and its reception at the IoT platform. The adjustment significantly enhanced performance, decreasing latency to 25 seconds. This reduction, nearly 50%, underscores the critical importance of appropriate terminal positioning and orientation in improving communication efficiency within L-Band LEO IoT systems.
