Designing the Power Oscillation Damping Controller for a Non-Inertial Renewable Driven Energy Source by Using a Non-Rigid Infinite Bus Framework
Over the past decade, there has been a substantial increase in renewable energy-based generation to fulfill global energy demands and reduce carbon emissions. To integrate a large number of renewable energy sources (RESs) to the electric grid, the conventional synchronous generators needed to be replaced. As a result, future power systems are likely to have reduced natural inertia and damping, leading to stability issues such as angular instability and low-frequency oscillations (LFO). Undamped LFO can impose considerable stress on the power transmission capabilities of the grid. Therefore, it becomes crucial to equip the RES with a well-designed power oscillation damper. This paper proposes a novel system frequency response-based non-rigid infinite bus modeling framework to design a power oscillation damping controller for inverter-based non-inertial RESs. The effectiveness of the proposed oscillation damping controller design is evaluated using non-linear time domain analyses. These analyses are conducted on the WSCC 9-bus 3-machine system, simulated on the MATLAB/Simulink platform.
