Digital Transformation of Industrial Waste Management: Smart Technology Adoption in ASEAN Manufacturing

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has revolutionized industrial waste management practices, necessitating a comprehensive examination of their implementation and effectiveness in Southeast Asian manufacturing contexts. Through a mixed-methods approach analyzing data from 150 manufacturing companies across five ASEAN countries, this research evaluates implementation levels, adoption patterns, and barriers to digital technology integration in waste management systems. Statistical analysis reveals varying levels of digital maturity across manufacturing sectors, with electronics leading at 45.3% (CI: 43.2-47.4%) advanced implementation, while food processing demonstrates opportunities for growth. IoT waste monitoring emerges as the most widely adopted technology (78.5%, CI: 76.3-80.7%), achieving the highest ROI rating (4.2), with a strong positive correlation between ROI ratings and adoption rates (r = 0.82, p < 0.01). However, significant implementation barriers persist, primarily initial investment costs (severity score 4.5) affecting 85.3% of respondents, and technical expertise shortages (4.2) impacting 78.7% of organizations. The study identifies a distinct digital divide across ASEAN nations, with Singapore demonstrating comprehensive technology adoption (IoT Solutions: 88.5%, CI: 86.2-90.8%) compared to emerging markets like Vietnam (45.7%, CI: 43.2-48.2%). ANOVA testing (p < 0.05) confirms significant differences between sectors in advanced technology adoption rates. This research contributes to understanding digital transformation dynamics in industrial waste management while highlighting the need for nuanced, context-specific approaches to technology implementation. The findings inform strategic recommendations for enhancing digital transformation initiatives, addressing critical areas including technology implementation strategies, barrier mitigation approaches, and policy frameworks needed to support successful digital transformation in industrial waste management across Southeast Asia.
