Opportunities for DNA Origami in Electrochemical Sensing Applications
Electrochemical sensing, a cornerstone of applied analytical chemistry, has witnessed significant advancements over the past 40 years. The last two decades have seen a surge in innovative developments, particularly with the advent of novel materials from the nanotechnology revolution. Today, the use of various nanomaterials to create new sensors is commonplace. In this overview, we delve into the potential applications of the DNA origami technique for self-assembling nanostructures designed for specific electrochemical sensing purposes. The precision in positioning sensing elements offers a higher level of organization, promising a bright future for the development of multifunctional electrochemical biosensors. While DNA origami is not yet widely adopted, and only a limited number of electrochemical applications have been reported in the literature, we are optimistic that increased awareness and research into the origami technique will pave the way for a promising future in DNA electrochemistry.
