Doctorate in Exact Sciences in Zaragoza and Barcelona in the early 1930s
During the first decades of the 20 th century, Spanish universities claimed the possibility of offering a doctorate degree, which was only authorized to the Central University of Madrid. There were continuous attempts to put an end to the situation, aiming for decentralization, but failed. The Second Republic even legislated to carry out this reform but the outbreak of the Civil War stopped this possibility. There are several works that the authors of this article have made and published about the Spanish Doctorate in Exact Sciences, mainly covering the period 1900-1936, that is, from the approval by García Alix ofa new plan of studies for the Faculties of Sciences, in 1900, until the beginning of the Civil War, in 1936. With this new article, we are going to complete this research by dealing with the only three doctors who did not graduate from the Central University from Madrid, one from Zaragoza in 1930, Juan Alfonso Gironza Solanas, and two others from Barcelona, José María Planas Corbella y Pedro Pi Calleja, in 1934 and 1935 respectively. We give an account of the legislative developments that made possible these exceptions, provide the basic data of the doctoral theses, show the academic and professional profile of the doctors and pay attention to the members of the juries, that judged the theses.
