Identification of echinocytes as a predictor of preeclampsia in patients at risk

Objective: In Mexico, preeclampsia is the main cause of maternal death. The aim of this study was to determine whether the identification of echinocytes increases the prediction of preeclampsia in patients at risk. Material and methods: In this prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study, a peripheral blood smear from pregnant women with risk factors was taken and stained with an acid-base stain (Wright). Results: The analysis was done on 41 patients (age 24 ± 6.8 years), weeks of gestation 33.4 ± 6. Echinocytes were present in six of seven women who developed preeclampsia (Relative risk: 3.84, 95% confidence interval = 0.508, 29.001). Conclusion: The identification of morphological alterations of erythrocytes, and specifically of echinocytes, in a peripheral blood smear in pregnant patients, may indicate an imminent risk of developing preeclampsia.
