Analytical assessment of multi-beam LEO constellations using improved stochastic geometry models

This paper considers a framework for examining aspects of the trade-space in LEO constellations and their impact on link performance using stochastic geometry. The Poisson point process model over spherical surface is refined to provide a better match between a stochastic model and real-world, deterministic LEO constellations. The application of this model to quantify different aspects of the trade-space, such as the constellation size, altitude, orbital inclination, user-to-satellite elevation angle and user-terminal location is discussed. The paper also considers the pragmatic scenario where LEO satellites providing broadband access serve the coverage area using multiple, narrow beams. Techniques to assess impact of co-channel interference from the serving satellite to the user terminal’s spectral efficiency are discussed.
