THE CONCEPT OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF A MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND ON THE EXAMPLE OF SKIATHOS ISLAND, GREECE
The article is devoted to the study of the concept of urban development of the Mediterranean islands. The island of Skiathos, Greece, was chosen for a detailed analysis. The thousand-year history of the island was studied, cultural monuments and unique natural features were identified, and the Mediterranean architectural style was analyzed. A map of the location of the tourist infrastructure of the island of Skiathos was developed. The Mediterranean is a historical region located in the Mediterranean basin. It unites the countries of two continents of Eurasia and Africa, as well as numerous islands and archipelagos: Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, Crete, etc. For thousands of years, the Mediterranean has been distinguished by its active life: close interaction, wars, trade and exchange of cultural achievements between ancient civilizations (Ancient Egypt, Phoenicia, Aegean culture, Ancient Greece, etc.). Despite this, the modern urban development of Skiathos Island began in the 1960s, when it was chosen as a new holiday area by the National Tourism Organization of Greece. Thanks to this, in 20 years, roads, an airport and many tourist resorts with hotels and villas along the coast with all the necessary infrastructure in the form of bars, restaurants, entertainment venues and beaches were built on the island.Consequently, the main concept for the development of small islands became the tourist direction of the Mediterranean countries, namely the development of tourist infrastructure: preservation of cultural attractions and unique natural features; increase in life activity; development of transport infrastructure; creation of resorts and recreational housing; development of entertainment infrastructure; formation of quiet and active recreation areas.
