An Analysis of FACTS Devices Control Strategies in Grid-Connected Photovoltaic (PV) Systems
Large-scale electricity generation has substantially increased by integrating renewable energy into the grid. This is to reduce the overwhelming electricity demand on utility. Moreover, it seeks to address the issue of global warming, as power generation remains vital. With technological advancement, solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems are synchronized with electric grids to support the overall generation to meet consumer demand. This progression requires reactive power control mechanisms from power generation to transmission and distribution processes. As many papers have proposed some solutions to these challenges faced with grid-connected PV systems applying flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices, it is important to consider analyzing by comparing those proposed controlled mechanisms utilized to control the power system voltage. With this said, this paper reviews the active power, reactive power, and voltage control mechanisms of some FACTS devices, proposed in many literature for grid-connected Photovoltaic systems operation. This work considers significantly four frequently used FACTS technologies for the review.
